Remote Access to Data of the Socio-economic Panel (SOEP)

Users at the University of Konstanz have direct remote access to SOEP data via a thin client located at the Cluster building, a unique feature of the Cluster's research infrastructure

In close cooperation with the German Institute of Economic Research (Deutsches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung, DIW) in Berlin, the Cluster has installed a so-called thin client. This is simply a stripped-down computer terminal for remote access to servers containing the datasets provided through the DIW's Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP). This way, all researchers at the University of Konstanz can access SOEP microdata directly from the Cluster building via a safe line.

If you wish to make use of this unique piece of research infrastructure at the University of Konstanz, please follow these steps:

  1. Familiarize yourself with the terms and conditions of access to SOEP microdata, which can be found online at the DIW's website here. First time users are advised to consult this document to get to know the basics of SOEP remote-access.

  2. You need to register for SOEP remote access via this form, which must be sent to the SOEP team. Since all user management is conducted by the SOEP team in Berlin, please make sure to at first contact Alisa Fränkel or Philipp Kaminsky via E-Mail.

  3. Once you have been granted permission to use SOEP remote access from Konstanz, you can book the thin client (located in Room Y314) by contacting the Cluster IT Support via E-Mail.

Likewise, in case of any questions about the local SOEP remote client, please contact Cluster IT support.
