Billy Kalima, Ph.D.

Billy Kalima was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Cluster of Excellence “The Politics of Inequality”. Before coming to Konstanz, he studied at the University of Zimbabwe (BSc Sociology, MSc in Sociology and Social Anthropology) and the University of the Free State (PhD in Sociology) in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

His research interests relate to stratification and differentiation, the welfare state, social movements, migration and integration. In Konstanz, Billy will be working on a project that is tentatively entitled "Understanding the trajectory of student protests in institutions of higher education in South Africa: The case of the 2015 #FeesMustFall protests". This research uses South Africa as a prism to explore the upsurge of university protests during the #FeesMustFall protests in 2015, and focuses on the dynamics of these protests, their evolvement and metamorphosis.

Billy stayed at the Cluster from October 2020 to April 2022.
