Half-time has been called for our first working period: our research center "The Politics of Inequality" has been running for three and a half years. It is time to look back, take a breath - and then tackle the second half!

Barb(in)eQ 2019

The first six months were filled with a great amount of work. So we celebrate at our "Barb(in)eQ" summer party 2019. (image: Universität Konstanz)

Fridays for Future

The "Fridays for Future" movement made many headlines in 2019. A quickly assembled team doesn't let the opportunity slip to survey the participants at a Konstanz rally. (image: Sebastian Koos)

The Berlin Science Week is a fantastic opportunity to present our results to a wider public. (image: Falling Walls)

Awards

When our researchers win awards, we're naturally extremely happy. Here Florian Kunze and David Dwertmann receive the "Best Paper with International Implications Award" 2019 of the Academy of Management. (image: Florian Kunze)

Prominent Guests

Numerous fellows and guest researchers are quick to jump on the opportunity to stay and work with us at Konstanz. Here Torben Iversen is giving a talk during his research stay in winter 2019/2020 (22 January 2020). (image: Jespah Holthoff)

For Families

Our researchers and colleagues must sometimes reconcile the needs of family and work life by bringing their children. So we acquired the "Kids Box", a box containing everything you need for childcare, rest, and play. We inaugurate the Kids Box at the end of January 2020. (image: Ines Janas)

Managing Office

The Managing Office is the organizational heart of our research center and runs all the processes that keep it functioning. Here is the Office team in 2020. (image: Ines Janas)

Growth

Since its inception in early 2019, our research center hasn't stopped growing. Therefore we constantly expand our office spaces, reconstruct and rearrange to use the disposable work areas as flexibly as possible. (image: Isabelle Wolf)

Working Atmosphere

Collaborative work profits immensely of short distances in communication and direct approachability. (image: Ines Janas)

Pandemic

2020 is the first year of the coronavirus pandemic. In this time, the University of Konstanz often feels like a very empty place. We continually strive for presence: in person, or through hybrid and online events and meetings. (image: Jessica Haase)

Early Career Researchers

Doctoral and postdoctoral researchers ("ECRs") newly arrived at our center receive a thorough introduction including a "Welcoming Event" - in 2020, this naturally required social distancing and masks. (image: Paul Töbelmann)

Pandemic

Retreat

Annual retreats are important dates for the "Inequality" community: checking our compass, discussing, learning one from another... the Retreat 2020 was held under corona conditions, with limited personal presence. In order for everybody to participate, this was a test for our hybrid event concepts. (image: Ines Janas)

Rector Elected

As a principal investigator, Katharina Holzinger has been a part of the undertaking 'Cluster of Excellence "The Politics of Inequality"' from the very first. In December 2020 she successfully ran as new Rector of the University of Konstanz. Congratulations! (image: Paul Töbelmann)

Christmas

Speakers

The Speaker and Co-Speakers make up the Cluster's Executive Board. This originally consisted of Marius R. Busemeyer (Speaker), Claudia Diahl (Co-Speaker), and Nils B. Weidmann (Co-Speaker), here in March 2021. In winter term 2022, Nils B. Weidmann is leaving the Executive Board and will be replaced by Gabriele Spilker. (image: Ines Janas)

Cluster Café

The Cluster Café is an important meeting place. Here you will always find somebody to chat and connect with, and if you have a few minutes free, you may read one of our international newspapers. (image: Ines Janas)

Cluster Café

No longer a secret: we have the best coffee. The coffee machine runs hot every day, even during the pandemic. (image: Jessica Haase)

Early Career Researchers

Doctoral and Postdoc researchers not only send their own representative to the Cluster Board. They also hold regular meeting, round table discussions, and annual retreats. During the pandemic, the retreat was held online, but this doesn't have seemed to kill the mood. (image: Ann-Sophie Lauterbach)

In_equality magazine

2021 we start a new undertaking: with the In_equality magazine, we approach a wide and diverse audience. The trait shared by our almost 800 subscribers is simply a common interest in inequality research. Here, issue 01 has just arrived. (image: Paul Töbelmann)

Professorships

Christina Zuber is a Principal Investigator of our research center. She is the first woman to complete the tenure track at the Department of Politics and Public Administration and was promoted to Full Professor of Domestic Politics and Public Administration in spring 2021. Professorships

Sebastian Koos, likewise a Principal Investigator, is called to a Junior Professorship on "Sociology with a Focus on Social Movements" in the fall of 2021. (image: Milica Milosavljevic)

Professorships

In the same year of 2021 we win over Gabriele Spilker to take up the new professorship in "International Politics - Global Inequality".

Unusual Weather

We simply cannot leave out this image of a very unusual day when Sahara dust colored the skies over Konstanz! (image: Jessica Haase)

Prominent Guests

Federal Minister of Education and Researach Anja Karliczek visits the University of Konstanz in June 2021 and is being shown our reseach center's work. (image: University of Konstanz)

Early Career Researchers

We haven't had such a large cohort of new pre- and postdocs as in 2021: during the Welcoming Event in 2021, there are 21 new arrivals. (image: Paul Töbelmann)

Summer

Summer 2021: have a cocktail - alcohol-free, of course - in our research center's colors! We still have the recipe if you're interested. (image: Jessica Haase)

Tripping

In July 2021, the Managing Office and Executive Board meet up for a relaxed get-together on the isle of Reichenau. (image: Jessica Haase)

Retreat

The Retreat 2021 must again be held under pandemic-related conditions. While the Cluster community was distributed across two venues, people took it in stride and in a good mood. (image: Ines Janas)

Intercultural

"Intercultural Networking Lunch" is what we call an event that was first held in November 2021 and is being held twice a year since: with good food and in a relaxed atmosphere, we come together with our many international co-workers and guests. (image: Milica Milosavljevic)

Training

Under the heading "Cluster Trainings" we regularly offer courses, round table discussions, information events and workshops for our researchers, offering training in diverse topics, methodology, career orientation and practical tools. Here you see a round table discussion on writing successful grant proposals in November 2021. (image: Sophia Timmermann)

Volkshochschule

In January 2022, the Volkshochschule (adult education center) Konstanz celebrated their 50 anniversary. Together with the Volkshochschule, we organized a public panel discussion with Jutta Allmendinger (Berlin Social Science Center, WZB), Ute Seifried (mayor of the town of Singen), Elke Großkreutz (headmistress of the Gebhard community school, Konstanz) and Marius Busemeyer, moderated by AC Coppens (The Catalysts). 400 people followed the event online. (image: Ines Janas)

Partings

In a community as big as ours, some people arrive while others leave. Here there is a surprise farewell party for Sophia Timmermann (Early Career Support, Managing Office), who left our research center in May 2022. (image: Paul Töbelmann)

In_equality Conference 2022

Our largest event to date was the In_equality Conference 2022 (06 to 08 April): After two pandemic years, our more than 200 guests hungered for a conference in person. 70 speakers in 22 panels, 3 keynotes and a poster session welcomed discussion of their latest research results. (image: Ines Janas)

In_equality Conference 2022

The In_equality Conference 2022 was held at the Bodenseeforum Konstanz, a modern venue offering all the trappings you could want for a fully hybrid event with several parallel sessions, including ample space for a poster session, lunch and conversations over coffee during breaks.
