This event is part of an event series „Cluster Training“.

Social scientists and linguists are interested in a wide range of texts and verbal exchanges that is not always ready for analysis in a digital format. In this meeting, we want to share and exchange experiences of the digitalization of text and speech data. Two Cluster projects already gathered a lot of experience in this task.

In the project: “Inequality in Street-Level Bureaucracy: Linguistic Analysis of Public Service Encounters”, the team selects local administrations and service domains and aims at recording communication between citizens and officials in those administrations. Interviews are transcribed and analyzed to build a taxonomy of administrative language. Long term goal is the development of a procedure to record the direct communication between officials and citizens in order to analyze them based on linguistic cues.

In the project: “Perceptions of Inequality in a Socialist Dictatorship: Evidence from the German Democratic Republic”, the team collects historical data from the archives of the former GDR districts and digitizes the contents of the archival material. They will then code information on the extent of perceived inequality and comparisons with third parties, as well as the main themes of the submissions and the response of the authorities.

Ingrid Espinosa and Patrick Zwerschke, who are both coordinating the respective data collection efforts, will share their experiences, will give helpful tips and answer questions.

The event will take place in a hybrid-format in Y213. A Zoom-link will be sent to all Cluster members and everyone registered shortly before the event.
